Remembering Cheryl

Screen Shot 2018-08-18 at 11.29.12 PM One of my favorite people in the world passed away this week. I loved her. Adored her. She was one of those friends I could trust and confide in and made the world significantly brighter. She was the most amazing mother in the world. She knew her children in a special, next level kind of way and nourished every part of them with such fierceness and wisdom. She was inspiring. She was patient and kind in the way that came from inside her like magic. Not in a way that can be learned or mimicked. She was insanely intelligent. She was fun and playful and involved.

She had the most beautiful, musical, Australian accent. She taught me about fun Australian traditions and I will always think of her when I enjoy a Tim Tam Slam or a meat pie or grilled banana. She was an artist and a writer and always learning. I even rehearsed the birds and bees talk I was going to give Penn on her! She leaves behind three exceptional little boys and a wonderful husband and I am holding them all in my hearts right now.

I met her about 7 or 8 years ago, I think. I can't remember now. It was before Lucy. Right after Lucy's birth she made me some magical Asian plum soup that she told me would heal everything. I wish I could make her some soup right now.

I was afraid of her cancer. Or, the Annoyance, as she called it. But I didn't expect this. Not so soon. And so I have many regrets for not reaching out more and doing more.

I'll miss you, Cheryl. Oh so much.

Galveston Vacation 2018

This summer we went to Galveston, Texas and the Miller Grandparents picked out the cutest beach house for us to stay in. All of my old memories of being at the beach, hot and crowded, left me thinking I wasn't actually a beach person. But after our time at the beach in Portland and here, I can officially say I was wrong!

We had a huge stretch of beach all to ourselves for the week. The water was warm and the weather was a lot cooler than Dallas. The ocean was right out the front door so we could wake up with leisure and pop out for a swim or a walk on the sand whenever we wanted. My dad and Daniel's parents both came! We grilled out and ate out and slept really well.

We saw the tall ship, The Elissa and enjoyed the Pleasure Pier and Rain Forest Cafe. Penn and I rented a Surrey Bike that seats 5 and rode the kids around the beach and for ice cream.

The last hurricane left an old roof in the ocean that I fell on and ended up getting a tetanus shot. Our back windshield shattered for no reason we could find. But not even blood and broken windows could dampen my joy. It was the very best beach vacation ever. I did not want to come home! DSC_2912 IMG_9136 IMG_9136

Hi Beautiful

Today is our Margot Rose's birthday. She would have been 9 years old. I found this thing I had started writing for her first birthday that made me feel all the ways I felt about her when she was first born. Such a fierce love and need to protect her. It's been 9 years, but it still feels like yesterday that she was here with us. She was so sweet. She loved music the most. I remember her dancing to any beat. Even the dishwasher. She was born in July and she passed in August of the next year, so we walk through these months feeling wounded, simultaneously mourning our loss and celebrating our life with Penn and Lucy and Milo.

The little video at the end, taken with some crappy cell phone, is of us at the library. Penn was making her laugh with this giant teddy bear. She was so loud the librarian had to come tell us to stop. We spent the rest of her life doing everything we could to keep her laughing like that. I love her every day and forever.

I spend my days holding her close with ideas that maybe I could put her back in. Keep her safe. Maybe if I rock her long enough I can encourage some sort of osmosis. Absorb her. And of course, I am. Just not literally. I imagine a bubble around her. Dreams and love and ideas are spun like sugar around us.

I spend my days kissing each roll beneath her chin, the back of her neck, the top of her head where the swirls of black hair spin around and around and into a peak at the top. I run my lips across the corner of her mouth, across the hill of her cheek and down to the bottom of her earlobe. I blow into her soft wrinkled belly button and the backs of her thighs. Her hands and feet find their way into my mouth like magic. She is the softest thing that has ever existed.

She burrows into my breast to nurse and heaves a sigh of contentment when we're all settled into one another. Her eyes close and her lashes are made from the feathers of baby birds. I am swollen with longing. I pray to Father Time to keep us this way forever. Or at least a little while longer.

When she cries in the arms of someone else I am pulled like a magnet. I am biologically wired to retrieve and protect but I wait. Smile. Gently take her when she's handed over and I coo and assure that it's okay out there in the world. That I'll always be here to come back to. Always. Always.

When she cries in her Daddy's cradle I wait longer. I whisper to her that her Daddy has never loved anyone more in the whole wide world and there are no arms better or safer for her to cry in.

Her Daddy stands tall and roars at the world with brawn and willpower promising excruciating elements to any who might harm her. Just as easily he turns and nuzzles her with such gentleness, golden whiskers and bright blue eyes. "Hi, Beautiful."

I spend my days holding her close and teaching her independence. Hoping I come upon some magical formula that can balance the two through the tornadoes of growing up. Hoping that someday she will be a woman, my daughter, and my friend, and we can sit back in our dreams, and love, and ideas, spun like sugar around us.

Portland Vacation 2018

We had the most perfect summer vacation in Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington. The actual traveling part was easy and everything was on time. Our rented house in the Alberta District was lovely. Our neighborhood had everything we needed for living and for fun. The weather was chilly and a refreshing break from the Texas heat. Every meal was a joy in taste and family time. We planned nothing and followed our nose about to see the sites, which is my favorite way to travel. With no schedule or expectations, everything you do is a success! ACS_0029 Milo thoroughly enjoyed his first plane ride. Every business and house had a Black Lives Matter sign or some type of peace and equality signage. Every single one. It was a big impact. DSC_3330 DSC_3339

We had coffee at Case Studies Coffee. Lucy and Milo were playing a rock counting game. Lucy asked Milo to count the rocks in his head instead of out loud. He put the rocks on his head. DSC_3369

We saw the Goonies rock with the amazing Provisnal family. Kristina took all the photos with me in them. I'm in some photos! Then we went to the most beautiful beach. Quiet and enormous with gorgeous rocks and waterfalls. I'm still thinking about it. It was cold, but Lucy couldn't resist jumping in. Milo couldn't run fast enough from a wave and he ended up wet and was not nearly as delighted about it as Lucy. We had a fire and roasted s'mores. We ate delicious noodles and dumplings at XLB. We made wishes on someone's front yard wishing tree, ate shave ice at Wailu Shave Ice, enjoyed Finnegan's Toy Store and Powell's Books in downtown Portland. Kristina cooked an amazing dinner for our large families and we enjoyed their adventurous back yard full of fun. We went bouldering with them and I fell in love with it! On our last day we went to the International Rose Test Garden. DSC_3969 DSC_3975 ACS_0130

It was the perfect length of time. Where you want to stay longer, but are also happy to be going home. I've been wanting to get away just for fun. Somewhere far and not just traveling for work or family. (No offense work or family.) This vacation really filled me up.

YMSL at Juliette Fowler

Penn and I volunteered with YMSL at Juliette Fowler. Our job was to help with their campus beautification by prepping the grounds for planting. Basically, shoveling dirt in nearly 100 degree weather. It was a lot of work! We hope the residents enjoy all the new garden beds.

Mommy Daughter time at Great Wolf Lodge

Lucy and I took a weekend trip to Great Wolf Lodge with her bestie, Lyra. Time alone with Lucy is extremely rare. The kids are pretty much a package deal, so wherever Lucy goes, Milo goes, including sports, birthday parties, dance and school functions. They have to share everything. Even their room. So this was a mega treat on a number of levels for us. We had SO much fun! We rode big slides and really enjoyed Magicquest. Big thanks to, Lyra's mom, Kouy, for having us on such an amazing trip!

Milo's 4th Birthday Party

Milo just got brave enough to go down those big blow up slides by himself. We decided for his fourth birthday we would put up one of those big slides in the backyard and invite the neighbors over to play and eat cake. Then unexpectedly it decided to RAIN all day! So at the last minute we threw up some decorations and balloons and the house was filled with kids. They had a blast and I think every toy we own got played with. Also, I'm pretty proud of the Spiderman cake.

Milo is the best little boy ever. He is cautious and contemplative and snuggly. When he's comfortable he is boisterous and loud and daring. He's always ready to go outside and ride his bike. He loves soccer and his friends and reading the book "Yummy Yucky" over and over again. I love him more than I will ever be able to say.

Young Men's Service League

Penn and I have joined the Young Men's Service League (YMSL). "Young Men’s Service League is a non-profit organization that initiates and encourages young men and their mothers to pursue philanthropic involvement in their community and provides an opportunity to enhance mother/son relationships." We had our first boys meeting where all of the boys were elected to the job they will perform in the group. The boys will run meetings using the parlimentary procedure. I am so excited to be a part of this first chapter in East Dallas.

Christmas 2017

DSC_7806 Christmas this year was simple and and fun. Our tree stayed green and fragrant through the whole holiday. We made ambitious cookies and gave them to our friends and neighbors. Lucy is obsessed with the book and cartoon The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. We made it a mission to get her a copy and she reads it now several times a day. She and Milo keep asking if we can keep it, fearing it's a library book that will have to be returned. We listen to the audio recording in the car.

I ordered a Whole Foods meal instead of cooking this year. The littles are at the magical age of play and I just didn't want to miss a minute of it over a stove or a dish washer. We enjoyed unwrapping presents, of course. Half of them were pictures and items from around the house that Lucy had wrapped up in whatever paper she could find. One of my favorite parts of the day was a random and epic sword fight between Penn and the little ones with swords that belonged to Penn when he was a toddler.

I loved watching Lucy and Milo wake up Penn to open presents after breakfast. In 2011, it was Penn waking up baby Lucy.

I got Lucy and Milo a toy called Toymail. The kids can send and receive voice messages to approved contacts through their toy. Lucy especially has the hang of it and I love the funny messages between her and Papa and the sweet things she sends to me.

Christmas was good and delicious and delightful!

Lucy's Winter Dance Recital

DSC_1421 Lucy had her Winter dance recital with Studio B at the beautiful McFarlin Auditorium at SMU. She was a toy soldier this year and I enjoyed another round of being the backstage dance mom. I've learned the ropes and come with a bag full of coloring books, playdough, puzzles and books because the girls have to manage staying in their hair, makeup and costume and stage ready until it's time to dance. Then there is a whirlwind of getting everyone out of their costume and into their other clothes for the stage filling group bow of all of the dancers. This is a real feat for a group of little ones.

Lucy's 6th Birthday

DSC_1654 Lucy turned 6 this year surrounded by her friends and family at ASI Gymnastics. SIX! Lucy has been a bright and shiny beacon of light in my world since she was born. There is no one like her. As her reading skills bloom her other artistic and musical talents become more vibrant and intentional. Lucy is very creative. She sings and plays the piano and makes art constantly. She performed in her first piano recital this year and didn't miss a note. She said she was really nervous and her heart was beating fast and you could see the relief when she sat down, but she was so composed up there! She participated in a musical theater class and continues dancing with Studio B.

She jumped and ran and smiled with her friends at her party and has enjoyed meeting so many new people at school. She had cupcakes and singing in her class on her birthday week. We were so happy to have Grandparents Miller and Papa in town to celebrate such a wonderful occasion!

My children's birthdays are a momentous feeling for me and her party was a total success. Happy Birthday, Lucy!

The Ginko is My Favorite Tree

DSC_1080 The Ginko is my favorite tree. There is one a block over from us that turns into the most brilliant yellow tree every fall and every time we pass it, which is at least twice a day on school days, someone says, "There's mom's favorite tree!" It's gorgeous. Ginko leaves are like rose petals. They are soft and smooth and they flutter if you toss them into the air. They do not turn into a crunchy dirty mess. It's like a silk rug around the bottom in the fall. I love them.

This year the property that this tree is on was sold and the house is currently vacant for remodeling. We were driving by and I happened to have my camera and the tree was almost at the end of losing all of its leaves. I pulled over and we had the best time playing in the yard.

Halloween 2017

DSC_7700 For Halloween Lucy was a Witch, Milo was a kangaroo and Penn was Gumby. We trick or treated on our fabulous street with our fabulous neighbors. Penn went out on his own with friends. There was a Halloween party in Lucy's kindergarten class with crafts and fun. The teacher's dressed up as the letter corresponding to their classrooms and the kids taped words starting with that letter on them. They had a lot of fun! And collected just the right amount of candy which is to say, not too much, but we still have some leftover in the cabinet.

I cleaned out the toy drawers and passed out small toys, bouncy balls and packets of organic honey as well as the standard fare. DSC_7686

Penn's Business Class Goes to the Rangers Game

Tamara Walker teaches Penn's business class. She works super hard for J L Long and her kids. Charles Schwab funded one of her Donor's Choose projects with a major bonus surprise donation of $10,000 PLUS a surprise trip for her class to attend a Ranger's Game in true VIP style. The kids were bussed over, fed, doused in swag that they were able to get autographed, met the players, got to ask them questions and had a tour of the stadium. Ms. Walker has more Donor's Choose Projects to be filled, if you're interested!

First Day of Kindergarten and 8th Grade

Lucy started Kindergarten and Penn started 8th grade this year. For Lucy it's just the beginning. For Penn it's the last year of middle school! Both are exciting times in our lives. July 4th in Oklahoma

We traveled to Daniel's family's farm in Oklahoma for July 4th. We enjoyed the peaceful property and time with family. There was a lot of fishing and swimming and ranger riding and the gigantic fireworks show they put together. I shot an enormous gun. Lots of ping pong too, until Penn broke his toe stubbing it on a chair while going for a ball.

We toured the Masonic Temple in Guthrie, Oklahoma. It was built in 1923 for 3 million dollars!

We are so lucky to have such a lovely place to gather with such wonderful people.

Lucy wrote a great book about her experience.

Father's Day 2017

Lucy's 2017 Spring Dance Recital

Lucy had the cutest Spring Dance Recital with Studio B at SMU's McFarlin Auditorium. The theme for the whole show was Where Dreams Come True and Lucy's class danced to Let's Go Fly a Kite, complete with kite props. The girls kept the kites a surprise from their parents for the whole semester! I've never wanted to be a backstage mom, but at Lucy's very first recital it was clear she wasn't going to give me a choice. Now I've embraced it and come armed with coloring books and card games to keep the girls busy until it's their turn to dance. I love getting to know all the girls and their sweet little personalities and learning how Lucy makes friends and follows directions.

I'm so proud of her bravery for getting on the big stage and smiling and dancing her heart out! This is SUCH a sweet time in her life and we are enjoying every moment.

Milo's 3rd Birthday

It warms me to live in a place where most of his guests are able to walk over. He felt special and loved. I know three is the last age of babydom. Three is my least favorite age because there are so many mental and physical transitions to go through. They become more coordinated and have a big vocabulary boost. But they also have potty training and still not as much coordination and vocabulary as they would like. Milo was such a sweet little baby and he is still such a sweet little toddler. He's smart and patient and self aware at a level that is so enjoyable to parent. He is boisterous and vivacious in comfortable company and a quiet little lap lump in new environments. He relies heavily on Lucy, but she enjoys his friendship. I can take him anywhere thanks to his dependable calmness. He is interested in everything. He'll happily sit at a restaurant table for an hour or walk an art museum with little complaint. He is not the rough and tumble boy full of wrestles and raucous, but more of a contemplative boy who is observant and funny. He fits right in. I love him more than anything. I got to photograph one of my most favorite human beings on the whole planet for her Save the Date wedding card! They are the most fun and happy couple and I loved watching them love. Bessie owns the wonderful dance studio, Studio B, that my daughter attends. She's a true champion of our community.

I love telling this story. When Lucy started dance she was so shy and had so much anxiety around new people she would practically have a panic attack. When I took her to buy shoes for her first dance class she cried so much I was certain Bessie would call me the next day and tell me there was no way they were going to let her dance there. But she didn't and Lucy went to dance and Bessie and the teachers were so kind and patient and encouraging and without judgment. Lucy had so much fun and from there really grew into someone who loves performing. (Now we can't get her to stop!) I adore this lady!

Penn's 13th Birthday

Penn turned 13 on November 27th. I have a teenager! We woke him up with breakfast and a candle like we have since he was little. He opened presents and we took him and some friends to play paint ball.

I am so lucky to be his mother. He has certainly made me a better person. He was born on Thanksgiving Day and I've always enjoyed the symbolism of that day. I love his dry wit and love of humor. I love how strong his convictions can be, his interest in music, good food and his obsession with playing soccer. I love his ability to forgive and his determination to move forward. I love his focus on the positive and how he doesn't let obstacles get him down. Penn makes me laugh and love and hope. Watching him grow and loving him is a joy and privilege.

DSC_8517 Penn dressed as Ken Bone for Halloween this year. He rode his bike with Waldo to a Halloween party and waited until he got there to don his mustache and name tag. He came back with a lot of candy so I guess they had fun! Lucy dressed up as Wonder Woman and Milo dressed up as Batman. We had so much fun trick or treating down our street and hanging out with our adorable neighbors. I love this street.

I had the great pleasure of shooting the fabulous secret party, Diner En Blanc for Itty Bitty Foodies. Check out her blog for a lovely post and in the video wrap up. It was spectacular! There were 2,300 in attendance. There are some strict rules. You must dress in all white from head to toe. This includes media, the band, and coordinators. Even the porta-potties were white! You bring your own all white tables and decoration and your own dinner. The location is top secret. Guests meet at a location to be bussed over to the surprise. This year was downtown at City Hall. It is such a spectacle of fun and friends gathered and I was so happy to be part of it!

We went out early in the morning to shoot a summer portrait for Baby T. The weather was gentle and his blue eyes were so sweet and sparkly. I've been watching him grow since he was a newborn and he manages to be cuter every time I see him! I love this stage where their personalities really start showing off. I also love that his amazing parents were willing to step in for a few, even though Baby T. was supposed to be the focus. They were great!

Fourth of July in Oklahoma

We went to Oklahoma to The Farm again for the Fourth of July. We had a 24 hour delay to wait out Lucy's surprise stomach virus, but once on the road it was a great and healthy trip surrounded by friends, family, food and a huge homemade fireworks extravaganza. Since some of the cousins couldn't make it we were so grateful to have Penn's friend Bramm join us!

This was the first year Milo and I have gotten in the water and gone kayaking. It was a quick and busy weekend and not much captured in my big camera. Just enough for Lucy to remember how much she loves her cousin, Grace. And Milo called all his Troop cousins Elsa because he thought they were the princesses from the movie Frozen. Which kind of melted me every time he asked for them. "Where's Elsa?"

I was the backstage mom helper which is the job only a crazy person will take. Luckily my mom flew in from Michigan and was there to help. Studio B has been really fantastic for Lucy. Milo's 2nd Birthday

IMG_5657 On May 21st Milo West turned 2 years old! He got to celebrate with grandparents from Oklahoma and Michigan. He made whipped cream for his strawberry shortcake and cried when we sang him happy birthday.

Milo is amazing. He is sweet and cuddly and smart and blonde. He adores Lucy and Penn. He went from hating the child care at the YMCA while I worked out to LOVING it and crying if we go straight to the pool. He loves swimming and is big enough to wear a puddle jumper. He likes choo choo trains and trash trucks and his toy microwave. He likes Peppa Pig and Mickey Mouse and chocolate. He loves chocolate.

I love him. I love this age. I love his smile, his beautiful hazel eyes and how he says "Peeze" and "Thank you mommy" and "Wassat sound?" I love him.

Penn Breaks His Arm

Penn broke his arm at a J. L. Long soccer clinic. A good break through the forearm and his elbow. He wore a long cast for six weeks. You might remember the last time he was hurt it was his broken clavicle while playing soccer at the SMU soccer camp.

Easter 2016 at Tietze Park

DSC_1254 I love Easter at Tietze Park! Some kids are real go getters with the egg gathering. The eggs are in a roped off section and when someone says Go! the kids rush in and fill their baskets.

My kids are kind of slow and thoughtful and methodical. Even when they are rushing it's more of a mental stressor than actual swiftness. Knowing this we were pressed right at the edge of the rope to be first in the gate. And despite being first and despite the hundreds of eggs everywhere, they came away with zero. Zero eggs. None. I mean, it was baffling how this could even be possible.

Which we were not making a big deal out of. But some sweet organizer saw them still digging around for maybe just one forgotten treat, went and got a bag of eggs and created a little Easter egg hunt JUST FOR LUCY AND MILO. It was incredibly generous. I was touched. You can see the sweet guy standing in the background of this first photo in the black shorts by the boxes.

He really made our day.

Lucy turned 4! Sadly I didn't take many photos. But we ate lemon tarts for breakfast and went downtown to play and opened presents. She invited some friends to go to Studio Movie Grill to watch The Good Dinosaur. She got a Disney Princess Cookbook and I rolled my eyes because it's so Disney and Princess and I'm not really a Disney kind of mom. But this a great cookbook and we've made several tasty things!

Thanksgiving Break in Arkansas

We went to see my Nana in Arkansas over Thanksgiving break. She moved to hospice care so we knew it might be one of the last times we all got to be together. It rained constantly for the entire trip so I just took photos with my phone. It was nice and sad and nostalgic to go back and hug her and see the old photos she kept around in her room. I love my Nana dearly. She taught me a lot about taking the high road and cooking. She might have had some strong opinions, but she was never judgemental towards me. I felt her love constant no matter my successes or my failures. She spent a lot of time with me at church, playing checkers with me and gave the best back scratches. Blanche LaJoy was a wonderful woman and I will always have good stories about her to tell my children while we make her chicken and dumplings.

Last year Penn and his friend Ian went to Camp Grady Spruce. This place is an 80's summer camp movie. By which I mean awesome. The grounds are huge and right on the lake and just manicured enough to get from one place to another. It's beautiful. It's not a resort. There is a lot of singing and chanting, shooting, horseback riding, swimming and sailing. Classic summer fun and he is looking forward to going back this year!

4th of July 2015

We went to Oklahoma to Daniel's family's farm for the week of July 4th. There was a humongous fireworks display, a lot of food and a lot of freedom. The kids swam and fished and rode in the ranger and played ping pong every day, all week. I love having a place to let the kids just go and make their own day. Lucy roasted her first marshmallow and Milo earned his first black eye in the bathtub. This is one of my favorite weeks.

Penn's Last Day of 5th Grade

Penn's last day of 5th grade was a whirlwind of celebration and goodbyes. The crossing guards dressed up as super heroes one last time. (We have the best crossing guards/volunteer dads ever.) The first student walked up and gave a speech with tears in her eyes and it was pretty much over for all of us. The students gave amazing speeches. The classes walked up to the stage and were acknowledged for their accomplishments. They recited poetry and sang songs and it all carried the feeling of something both close and quaint and magnificent. When school was out for the last time at Lakewood Elementary, there were more speeches and tears and gifts and a parade of decorated cars to honk out the last of elementary school.

Penn's class is really a lovely group of people. It was never more evident as it was on this last day.

Lucy in the Rain

Texas has experienced record breaking rain and flooding this month. We are looking forward to the opportunity to dry out. In the meantime Lucy really loves her new umbrella.

Milo's First Birthday

Milo turned one year old on May 21st! I can't say enough good things about him. He is SO cuddly and so sweet. Like all his siblings before him, he is a thoughtful baby mostly content to observe thoroughly before jumping in. He cannot resist pulling Lucy's hair. He likes Veggie Straws, pretending to karate chop daddy to smithereens, the Ten Little Ladybugs book, dancing, swimming, putting things in things, putting tops on things and petting the dog. He really loves his yellow blanket. He loves his little fox in the last picture. Obviously.

For his birthday he had a hot dog party and played with the best kids ever. I made him a chocolate vanilla marble cake and it was not delicious. Sorry, kid.

Milo is amazing and fully reaping the rewards of being the last baby.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

In May, Penn's class took a week long field trip to Washington D.C. with their teachers. They had a wonderful time and saw (among so many sites) the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Jamestown Settlement, took a ghost and graveyard tour, went to the holocaust museum, saw a baseball game, Mount Vernon, Changing of the Guard, the Capital, Supreme Court and the National Zoo.

I am so happy he got to have this experience and so grateful for the amazing teachers and chaperones that sent back photos regularly.

Milo: 11 Months

Milo is eleven months old. He is weary of being toted around and has decided to make some efforts towards mobility. He kind of rolls over now. He still thinks tummy time is a sick joke. He's taking a lot of wobbly steps holding on to our hands. Peek a boo is still a hit. He cannot resist pulling Lucy's hair whenever she is in arms reach.

He can eat food from a pouch like the rest of this first world generation. He's also really fond of ritz crackers, rice, pasta, hot dogs, cauliflower, bananas, avocados, beans and potatoes.

He has the most beautiful hair and the most beautiful eyes, but I still can't tell you what color either are.

He can say Mama and Dada and has words for dog, hot and stop. He makes the sweetest little grabby hands when he wants to be picked up.

Love him so much it hurts.

Over Spring Break we went indoor skydiving at iFly Dallas. It was the most fun experience! The crew was efficient and talented and we were entirely entertained.

Austin 2015

In January I had the opportunity to travel to Austin and photograph Texas State Representative Jason Villalba being sworn in. His beautiful family was there to support him. I adore being in the capitol building and watching the hub of government buzz. I was really fortunate to be able to take Penn in with me. While he couldn't get a seat on the capitol floor during the swearing in, he was able to watch a live stream from Villalba's office.

My mom also came down from Michigan to help watch the babies while I worked. I LOVE my job.

Sometimes after a client leaves I throw my kiddos on the background for a few photos before I clean up. I don't ask for much. Their hair isn't combed and their clothes don't match. But they are happy and silly and very much themselves.

I love kids. All of them. I like watching things grow and babies are the epitome of this idea. I like watching them form opinions about who and what they like. I like being able to turn loud scary helicopter sounds around into fascinating machines to watch.

I love every inch of Milo. Especially his smile.

Penn's Spring Science Camp

Penn's 5th grade class went on a Spring Science Camp. Thanks to the magic of technology the teachers and chaperones took lots of photos and sent them back for us. I felt like I was there! They did a lot of team building activities, hands on science exploration, archery and fishing. He really had a great time. I'm so thankful for all of the opportunities like this his school provides.

Daniel turns 40!

For Daniel's 40th birthday we had a backyard house concert party. Jacob Lofland played and we ate crock pots full of chili and carrot bundt cake. Children jumped and ran and played in the sand box and we laughed and felt all the warm fuzzies that these special milestone birthday's bring us.

40 is special. 40 years is real and right in the thick of it, full of all of the amazing rewards and wonders of children and ideas coming to fruition and perspective that senses the truth and weight of our choices. It's also old enough to know real joy. And real loss.

My husband is a lovely, strong and amazing person full of ideas and convictions and love, who tirelessly looks to improve himself and the things around him. I love him and delight in his every birthday.

Minecraft U at Dallas Startup Week

Daniel began Minecraft U because he loves Minecraft and how well it allowed him to teach code and how to behave online to kids. You can learn more about the curriculum or sign up for a camp at www.minecraftu.org. He was invited to speak at Dallas Startup Week about it this year. Dallas Startup Week is a fantastic five day event that highlights the startup culture in Dallas. So proud of how he has built Minecraft U into such a great platform!

Milo: Seven Months

Milo's seventh month enjoyed a great cognitive growth spurt. More things are really funny to him, he tries to play peek a boo himself, he can roll over from front to back, he enjoys some solid food, he grew two teeth and he can sit up! He is such a sweet little sugar bear. This is my favorite sized baby.

Penn in Soccer

Despite being a year round sport for Penn and bringing my camera to photograph as many games as I can, I haven't made mention on this blog since July 2013. The Cheetahs continue to be a great team winning a first place trophy for last season and slogging bravely through an indoor season. Practice has begun for Spring. This will be their last season as a team of elementary students.

Looking back through some games, it's always fun to see how many games Grandparents Miller were able to come to and how the babies have grown.

Milo: Six Months

I worried that I had a hard time coming up with some outstanding characteristics for Milo. Then I realized that the thing most outstanding about him is that he is so easy! Now I just have to get brave enough to offer him some sleep training so that he'll stop waking up at night.

Christmas 2014

The holidays were wonderful and relaxed in Dallas, though tainted with illness. Lucy and I had a cold. Milo had the croup. Penn had a fever, cold and a face that was swollen and painful. Daniel eventually succumbed. Ai yi! It took practically the whole break for us all to get better.

We are well now and enjoying the trampoline we got for Christmas.

Lucy's 3rd Birthday

Lucy turned three on December 7th and she had the best outdoor petting zoo party in our back yard! We had chickens, bunnies, a pig, a goat and pony, cupcakes and nutella hot chocolate. The backyard construction project is not finished, but I was thrilled for it to finally be put together enough to have friends over.

Lucy charms me at every moment. Her smiles and giggles and hugs are brilliant and contagious. She is a teeter totter between proud declarations of "I can do it!" and moans of, "I caaaaannnn't." She has quite clearly overcome mountains of shyness and she has boldly ventured into dance class.

I love her more than anything.
